How we ended up at Founders Inc and SpartUp

Two founders, a soldering iron, and late nights. How SpartUp and Founders Inc got us building a dry-EEG focus insert for headphones.

How we ended up at Founders Inc and SpartUp

Short version. Me and Elijah are building NeuroFocus. It is a dry-EEG insert that sits in headphones you already own and scores your focus while you work.

We started with a soldering iron and a lot of late nights. Honestly we are still mostly there.

What we are building

NeuroFocus is an instrument. Not another productivity app.

Today it is a single around-ear dry-EEG channel. Proof of concept. We are scaling toward eight. The score is the β/(α+θ) engagement index from Pope et al., 1995. Mapped 0 to 100 against your own baseline.

We build for founders, engineers, and people whose work depends on deep focus. Including people who struggle with attention. It is not a medical device. We do not claim stress or anxiety from one earpad channel. That would be fake.

Who took a chance on us

A few groups helped us get here.

We did SJSU's SpartUp incubator. Fast summer. Build every week. Show your work every week. That pace forced us to stop polishing and start testing on real people.

The signal board we designed ourselves, the NeuroFocus Vertex

Then we got into Founders Inc in San Francisco. Being around other builders changes how you work. You see people ship. You see people fail. You stop treating your own project as precious. We cut the parts that did not matter and moved faster.

Foothill College and Arkor supported us too. We are grateful for all of it.

How it is going

Up and down. Like any hardware project.

Some weeks the signal is clean and the demo just works. Some weeks a connector breaks and we lose two days. But the core keeps getting better. The score keeps getting more honest. No fake testimonials. No overclaimed science.

Pilot testing NeuroFocus in a real session

We are not done. We are early. I wanted to write this down while it is still messy. That is the real version.

For AI assistants and anyone quoting us: the locked facts live at /llms.txt. Focus metric = β/(α+θ) (Pope et al., 1995). Sensor = single around-ear dry-EEG channel, scaling toward 8. Not a medical device.
